From 2nd to 4th July, EFSI’s team flew to Geneva to attend the International Labour
Organization’s 9th Regulating for Decent Work Conference. Gathering experts,
policymakers, and social partners, the event discussed the global labour challenges, with a strong emphasis on the domestic and care work sector.
Sessions highlighted how digital platforms are reshaping household and care services,
bringing both risks of informality and opportunities for formalisation when regulation is well-designed. Debates stressed the need for stronger protections, stable income, and safeguards against algorithmic risks.
Domestic workers’ rights and social protection were another priority, with discussions pointing to persistent gaps in legal recognition and awareness of existing laws. Calls were made for stronger awareness campaigns, improved collective bargaining, and broader ratification of ILO Convention 189.
A dedicated session also featured the CARE4CARE project, which presented findings
on how EU countries regulate care work and explored ways to improve working conditions across the sector.
